To increase the bioavailability of poorly soluble APIs without resorting to high doses that could be impractical or uneconomical to manufacture, too large to take comfortably, or pose safety risks to patients, product developers have leveraged several strategies to increase the dissolution rate and solubility of APIs.

Hot melt extrusion (HME) is a solvent-free process often used in the development of solid oral dosage forms of poorly soluble APIs. Developers have used this approach to improve bioavailability of API and to prepare dosage forms with controlled release of API.
